SLATE & STONE

Slate and stone sealers and coatings

When it comes to choosing a slate or stone sealer you must first decide the finish and the level of protection you are looking for. If you are looking for a sealer to enhance the colors and textures with a wet look or gloss finish you are going to want to use a decorative concrete sealer. If you are looking to keep the appearance of the slate and stone in its natural state you are going to want to use a penetrating concrete sealer.

Decorative concrete sealers are used to add a decorative finish and are usually acrylic or urethane based. Penetrating sealers are used when a natural, flat finish is desired. Penetrating concrete sealers can be water based or solvent based and are usually a silane, siloxane chemistry. They are used to protect against salts, including deicing salts and salt water pool decks, and they are able to resist staining from oils and greases.

SILOXA-TEK® 8500

A natural, flat finish slate and stone sealer that will not change the look or appearance. Water repellency and salt resistance make this our favorite slate and stone sealer.

The 8500 is used to protect slate and stone from water, salts and weathering. This can include deicing salts and salt water that may splash from a salt water pool. It can also include wind driven rain and moisture intrusion. The Siloxa-Tek 8500 is able to resist this weathering on exterior applications. Meanwhile slate and stone are kept strong and waterproof on interior applications. Not only that but mold, mildew and efflorescence growths are reduced and are easily cleaned off.

Available in a ready to use version, or an ultra concentrated version. The ultra concentrated version is mixed with 4 gallons of distilled water prior to application. Two coats are easily applied wet-on-wet (the second coat is applied immediately after the first coat while the first coat is still wet) with a sprayer, roller or brush. The concrete retains its natural appearance after sealing and will not yellow or fade with UV light exposure.

SILOXA-TEK 8510

All the benefits of the 8500 with the added benefit of resistance to staining from oils and greases.

The Siloxa-Tek 8510 is our flagship sealer and a triple threat when it comes to protecting against water, salts and stain resistance from oils and greases. This can include grease that may splatter from a BBQ grill and salt water that may splash from a salt water pool. The 8510 is also able to resist wind driven rain on stone homes and chimneys. If used on interior applications it will protect from spills and food stains. Because of the small amount of solvent carrier, this high actives penetrating sealer is the deepest penetrating and longest lasting sealer in the Siloxa-Tek line.

Available only in a ready to use version, two coats are easily applied wet-on-wet with a solvent rated sprayer, roller or brush.

CRYLI-TEK 5505

Best used where a high gloss or wet look finish is desired to enhance and darken the substrate.

When you are looking to bring out the colors and textures of slate and stone with a clear, non-yellowing finish the 5505 is an excellent choice. Since the 5505 is solvent based, it is the longest lasting sealer in the Cryli-Tek line. The 5505 can be applied to a substrate that has been previously sealed as long as the previous sealer was a solvent based acrylic. Keep in mind acrylic sealers do not last as long as penetrating sealers and may need to be reapplied more frequently.

One thin, even coat of the 5505 is applied with a 3/8” nap solvent rated high quality roller.

The 5505 may be slippery when wet. The Grip-Tek 250 slip resistant additive can be mixed in to the 5505 for added traction. If the wet look finish of the 5505 is too shiny the Matte-Tek 5000 may be added to reduce the gloss.

CRYLI-TEK 5500

Best used where a satin or low sheen finish is desired. This low VOC, water based sealer will not enhance or darken the substrate but will give it a subtle shine.

We took all the best attributes of the 5505 - clear, non-yellowing, UV stable and made it into a satin finish water-based formulation. It is not overly glossy or shiny but will keep slate and stone protected from weathering while remaining breathable.

The 5500 is water based and VOC compliant in all 50 states making it a great option in areas with strict VOC laws.

One thin, even coat of the 5500 is applied with a 3/8” nap high quality roller.
