PREPARATION

  1. New “green” concrete must be properly cured. Concrete should obtain 80% of design strength, typically achieved within 14-28 days.
  2. The concrete substrate must be structurally sound and clean of oil, grease, dirt, wax, curing compounds, efflorescence, paints, previous sealers, adhesives and other contaminants that might interfere with the penetration of the sealer. Power wash, acid etch or mechanically scarify as necessary to achieve the desired surface condition. If acid was used to clean the concrete, neutralize the surface and rinse with water prior to application. Allow for proper dry time before application. Surface zone moisture content of the concrete should not exceed 4% wt. Do not apply if standing water is visible.
  3. Surface and air temperatures must be at least 60°F during application. Surface and air temperatures should not exceed 90°F. Do not apply when temperatures are expected to fall below 32°F within 8 hours or when rain is expected within 12 hours following application. Keep material from freezing. If freezing conditions exist before application, let the substrate thaw before application. Do not apply during inclement weather or when inclement weather is expected within 12 hours.
  4. Crack, patching and expansion joint sealants can be applied before application; always test for compatibility and adhesion.
  5. Protect people, property, vehicles, window glass, roofing materials, plastic products, shrubbery, landscaping and all surfaces not set for treatment from overspray.

APPLICATION

Always test a small area before application to ensure desired performance, aesthetics, coverage rates and to verify application technique. Let test area dry thoroughly, 5-7 days, before inspection.

  1. Wash the entire concrete surface with a clean rag and fresh water. Don’t scrub the concrete. Small particles of grit trapped in the fabric can scratch the concrete's polished surface. Make sure that all dust and dirt are rinsed off the countertop surface.
  2. Use a fresh clean rag and saturate the entire concrete surface with clean water allowing water to penetrate for 2 minutes while keeping the entire surface saturated.
  3. In a 1/2 gallon bucket or container, mix equal parts of clean water and sealer. For example: mix 1 cup of sealer with 1 cup of water. This will create a 50% dilution.
  4. Using the same rag as Step 2, saturate the countertop with this mixture, while keeping the solution continuously moving, ensuring that the entire surface stays wet for 5 minutes. Do not allow any area of the surface to dry out.
  5. Next add additional sealer and water to the remaining mixture at 3:1 ratio. For example add 3/4 cup of sealer and 1/4 cup water to remaining 50/50 mixture.
  6. Saturate the concrete surface with the sealer mixture keeping the it moving for 5 minutes adding additional mixture as needed to ensure the surface of the concrete does not dry.
  7. Completely wring out the rag you have been using in Steps 2-6 and wipe up excess puddling or pooling. To avoid streaking wipe the surface in long straight strokes leaving an extremely paper thin layer of sealer remaining! Do not wipe the surface dry, allow the thin layer of remaining sealer to slowly soak into the concrete.
  8. Apply a second coat (starting again from Step 6) 30 minutes after you have completed step 7. Allow the countertop to dry for 24 hours.
  9. After the countertop has dried for 24 hours, place a drop of water on a few areas of the sealed surface and allow it to sit for 5 minutes. Wipe up the water. If the concrete has darkened beneath the water drop, the concrete isn't fully sealed: repeat Steps 3-8. Depending on how porous your concrete surface is, you may need up to 6 applications before the surface is completely sealed.

WAXING

You can wax your concrete surface 48 hours after the sealer passes the water drop test. Several thin invisible applications of a concrete wax are recommended. Apply wax with a sponge wax applicator. Dampen the applicator with clean water and wring out. Use the damp applicator to apply a thin coat of wax in circular patterns, working on 2 square feet at a time. Immediately after applying the wax (before it dries), use a cloth to wipe off excess wax—it will seem like you’ve wiped up all of the wax but you will be leaving behind an invisible layer of wax protection on the surface. Repeat this process three times. Once the entire countertop has been waxed, use a buffing pad to buff out the finish. If needed, use a 0000# steel wool pad to lightly buff out streaking or unevenness in the wax finish.

Monthly Maintenance

We recommend waxing monthly with a concrete wax; it protects and beautifies the surface finish while enhancing Countertop Sealer 660 beneath. Clean up spills as soon as possible.

NOTES

Maintenance:

The concrete surface can be cleaned with mild soap and water. No citrus or vinegar-based products should be used. Organic does not always mean “mild” and can include citrus ingredients that you’ll want to avoid.

Dry Time

Typical drying time is 4-6 hours at 70°F and 50% relative humidity. Cooler temperatures or higher relative humidity can extend the drying time. Treated surfaces will be ready for pedestrian and vehicle traffic within 24 hours.

Clean Up

Clean equipment and tools with soap and water. Unused or old material may be disposed of in a waste disposal site in accordance with local, state and federal laws.

Precautions/Safety

Avoid contact with skin, eyes and clothing, do not take internally. Use appropriate safety equipment during application and handling. Please refer to the safety data sheet (SDS) for additional precautionary instructions before use.

Application Notes

  • Work in an area with relatively still air. Breezy or drafty environments can cause the sealer to prematurely dry, creating unwanted steaks.
  • Do not attempt to seal under radiant heat or sunlight. Any source of radiant heat will cause the sealer to prematurely dry, creating unwanted streaks.
  • Practice on a sample piece of concrete before attempting to seal an entire concrete project.
  • Do not use on concrete tables that have been sealed with a manufacturers wax or sealer.
  • Use a concrete wax in addition to Countertop Sealer 660 for added shine and longevity.
  • Water repellency may take up to 7 days to develop.

Best Performance

  • Proper application is the responsibility of the user.
  • Make sure the most current versions of technical data sheets and safety data sheets are being used.
  • Do not use in immersion service or constant chemical exposure areas.

Coverage

30 square feet per 16 oz. Variations in texture and porosity of substrate will affect the coverage and performance of the product.
